Late Summer Fishing

Report Date: September 22, 2019

Summer fishing has been hot and cold. Most of our charters have either been fishing for mahi or swordfish.

The mahi fishing has been good one day and not so good the next. For whatever reason the mahi bite has not been as consistant as it should be. That does happen from time to time. With that said the mahi bite has been real good and consistant in the Florida Keys. I had the opportunity to fish with my good friend Captain Dave Shillinger on the boat Tailwalker out of Hawks Cay on Duck Key in the Florida Keys. We enjoyed very good mahi fishing and deep dropping and managed to catch a nice swordfish on our first drop of the day. Even though we target the some of the same species, the tactics and styles vary a little, wich makes it very interesting. I am always willing to learn different fishing styles as they may prove helpful on our own fishing charters. Capt. Dave is and excellent fisherman along with his mate Mike. If you are ever in the Florida Keys and looking to fish give home a call, you wont be disappointed.

The swordfishing pretty consistent this summer but has slowed down the past two weeks. We managed to catch swordfish up to 180lbs. The last trip we did have two bites but only managed to catch a squid. With that said it seems as though the squid has started to push through our area. The same thing happened the last two years. The squid will try and eat our sword baits and that makes it nearly impossible to catch a swordfish. When the squid are here in big numbers so are the swordfish. Unfortunately the swords are just gorging themselves on the squid and are reluctant to eat our rigged baits. Once the squid move out from our area the swordfish bite will be phenominal as it was the past few years.

We are geared up for fall fishing. The fall mahi bite last year was very good and are hoping for the same this year. With the fall also brings good fishing for wahoo. Especially around the full moon. We caught quite a few fall wahoo last year.

Along with all the fishing we have been doing, we did manage to do some upgrades to the boat. We installed two brand new Suzuki 200HP engines. The power and reliability are awesome. We also upgraded the fuel and electrical systems. The boat feels brand new and practically is.

With the great fall fishing just getting started, lets get you booked. Just give me a call, text or send me an email.

Catch Em Up!
Capt. Mike Busse
