Report Date: March 19, 2019
It has been a while since my last report. I have been extremely busy with charters almost every day.
The fishing has been from fair to off the charts excellent.
Lets start with the sailfishing. So far the sailfishing has been fair. We still have not seen the double digit catches we usually see this time of year. Most days we have caught anywhere from one sailfish to three sailfish. It seems we are having the same fishing pattern for sailfish as we did last year. Last year the best sailfishing didn't start till late March and lasted through May. We have done a few half day planer fishing trips when the sailfish bite is slow. Planer fishing can be very productive as the planers take our trolled bait deep and far behind the boat. We have caught kingfish, blackfin tuna and wahoo using this technique.
Now on to the off the charts fishing. The swordfish bite has been nothing short of epic! We have caught swordfish on twenty one straight trips. We have caught anywhere from one swordfish to four swordfish per trip.. We are getting about six bites a day on average. We had the same epic swordfish bite this year as we had last year. I attribute this to the squid they feed on. Squid makes up a majority of their diet. We saw a huge influx of squid from November thru the middle of January. The swordfish were here but were gorging themselves on squid and had no interest in our baits. Once the squid pushed out of the area, the swordfish bite turned on. The swordfish bite has still remained excellent. The swordfish we have been catching have ranged from sixty pounds to well over three hundred pounds. I know of a few fish over five hundred pounds being caught.
Swordfishing is one of my specialties. I am not sure how much longer this epic swordfish bite will last, but if you are looking to catch a fish of a lifetime, NOW is the time. April thru July is by far the best time of year to catch fish in South Florida. As we have our annual migration of Mahi,Blackfin Tuna, Kingfish and Swordfish. So give me a call or send me an email to get your trip booked.
Catch Em Up!
